A generational home project in Glen Ridge, NJ, uses pavers and Thin Brick supplied by Pine Hall Brick Company for the PBS series This Old House. This time, it’s an impressive makeover of a family home that includes replacing a concrete walkway with pavers and refaces porch piers with Old School 8s, our retro Thin Brick product. Kevin O’Connor discusses pavers with Sunita and her daughter Asha.
A generational home for parents aging in place with their grown daughter and her husband is featured this season on This Old House. The series will be telling the story of an 1887 Victorian that will be bringing back some of its original details, as it undergoes renovations to make room for multiple generations of a family to live under its roof, all at the same time.
And this season, Pine Hall Brick Company will again be along, as the project is featuring English Edge Accent Gray pavers in a walkway out front and Old School 8s Thin Brick on the porch piers.
Doug Rose, Pine Hall Brick, speaks with Jenn Nawada on camera about pavers and Thin Brick.

The residence is the home of Sunita and Shankar in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, about 16 miles west of New York City. The couple spent 25 years pursuing careers and raising a family. With their children grown, they are finally realizing their dream of renovating the 3,400-square foot home and restoring some of its original architectural details, while at the same time, re-fitting the old house into a place for them, their daughter Asha and her husband, Jason, who want to raise their own children in the house.
The front porch and entryway will be updated. The old asbestos siding will be replaced with square-cut cedar shingles on the front façade’s second floor and diamond-shaped cedar shingles on the third floor.
The interior spaces will be reconfigured so the couple can age in place and provide space for their daughter’s family.
The work itself will be extensive, as part of the work by Dettmore Home Improvements and the This Old House team will be to address poorly executed past remodels and to improve efficiency and comfort. The bones of the house are in bad shape and shoring them up will take priority over fancy finishes. A new layout will be created on the first and second floors and an in-law suite for the parents will be carved out on the third floor.
